March | 2006

Duration: 4'16

The days leading up to the Disbandment Parade at RAF Coltishall in 2006 were largely spent listening in on a variety of spaces - the sonic ‘chambers’ of the hangars, the gym facilities, the air traffic control building and its ‘satellite’ caravan some distance down the runway. My primary interest shifted to the overlooked or discrete aspects of the rundown and the ‘choreography’ of the Parade Day.

I produced three pieces of work (in 2006-7) intended to function as ‘sketches’ for a proposed site-based work.  The video 'March' used material shot in the three days before this Parade. The audio that precedes the first shots highlights the harmonics of the interior of hangars/workshops during the maintenance. A resonating sound - like a sustained organ note - is punctuated/pierced by the noise of drills and other tools, then (male) voices shouting and whistling. Short clips show the varying tactile nature of maintenance: an engineer in a green work boilersuit is almost swallowed up by the jet engine he is working on; another is jumping up and down on a Jaguar wing and a mechanised undercarriage is opened and closed. On the parade ground, echoey voices travel far, almost matched in volume by bird song, tiny wobbly silhouettes of airmen are buffeted by strong winds while rehearsing for the march. One man has his arms and legs outstretched (in a star shape) falling into the wind that keeps him upright. There are more familiar shots of jets firing up and taking off into the big Norfolk sky, jet noise continues, close-up and wide shots of the empty swimming pool, now slowly emptying of water. There’s a view from inside the ATC caravan, and one of a solitary figure in a hi-vis jacket sitting outside, watching the final days of flying.
